A Cigarette & a Good Suit, c.1930

An original British studio portrait, dating to around the late 1920s or early 1930s.

A wonderfully self-conscious young gentleman sits for his portrait in a dark suit and bow tie, one leg crossed over the other, cigarette held loosely in his hand and an open magazine resting beside him.

There is something wonderfully theatrical about the whole thing, from the carefully parted hair and enormous lace-up boots to the rather magnificent expression.

The reverse carries the printed mark of Gale’s Studios Ltd, a photographic studio with branches across Britain.

An original period photograph, not a modern reproduction. Age-related toning, marks and gentle wear are present, all part of its history and character.
