A wonderful group of three original early 20th-century photographic postcards, kept together and apparently showing members of the same family across several generations.

The photographs have that extraordinary stillness found in early family photography. An elderly woman appears with two of the children in two images, while another shows a younger woman surrounded by four children. The same little girl and young boy can be recognised across the group, suggesting these were taken during the same period.

The clothes are particularly lovely, oversized white collars, velvet dresses, hair ribbons, beads, buttoned boots and the elderly woman's long dark dress, jacket and hat. Nobody seems particularly delighted about having their photograph taken, which somehow makes them all the better.

The backs are printed in the traditional divided postcard format, suggesting the photographs could originally have been sent through the post, although these examples appear unused.

Three beautifully evocative pieces of British social history which have survived together for around a century.
