A rare glimpse into a Victorian interior, preserved on a large-format studio photograph.
This original Victorian portrait captures a young woman seated beside an elaborately carved table, dressed in a richly detailed bustle gown with jewellery and carefully arranged hair. Behind her are shelves of books, while the studio setting, ornate furniture and fashionable dress create a striking image of late 19th-century domestic life.
The photograph has a wonderful soft sepia tone and retains the quiet presence that only genuine nineteenth-century photographs seem to possess. The large cabinet-sized format makes it particularly decorative and suitable for display, as well as appealing to collectors of Victorian photography, costume history and social history.
Dating from around the 1870s–1880s, the sitter wears a fitted bodice, bustle skirt and jewellery typical of the period. The image offers a fascinating record of Victorian fashion and portrait photography.
