hallmarked sterling silver butterfly brooch pendant, birmingham c.1895–1905

hallmarked sterling silver butterfly brooch pendant, birmingham c.1895–1905
A charming antique sterling silver brooch pendant dating from the late Victorian to early Edwardian period. This beautifully detailed piece features a butterfly beneath a spray of flowers, framed by a scalloped border and retaining its original glazed compartment to the reverse.
Designed to be worn either as a brooch or suspended from a chain as a pendant, it is a lovely example of sentimental jewellery from the turn of the twentieth century. Pieces of this type were often used to hold a treasured photograph, lock of hair, pressed flowers or another personal keepsake.
The reverse bears Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks, including the lion passant and anchor assay mark, together with a date letter and maker's mark. The exact date has not been confirmed, but the style and hallmarks place the piece comfortably within the late Victorian to Edwardian era, circa 1895–1905.
The original compartment remains intact beneath its protective cover. The photographic insert present when acquired has been removed, allowing the next owner to personalise the piece with their own photograph or keepsake if desired.
A wonderfully evocative piece of antique jewellery, equally suited to wear, collecting, or display within a cabinet of curiosities.
Condition Good antique condition with age-related wear and patina consistent with age. Hallmarks present. Brooch fitting and pendant loop intact.
