Vintage Spear's Games Draughts Set, circa 1930s

Vintage Spear's Games Draughts Set, circa 1930s
A charming early Spear's Games draughts set dating to the late 1920s or early 1930s, complete with original wooden counters and illustrated advertising panels inside the box.
The box retains its bold red finish and silver "Draughts" lettering, softened by decades of use and storage. Inside are the original turned wooden playing pieces in natural and black stained wood, together with printed advertisements for other Spear's Games including Silly Sam, The Bonzo Chase and Springrings.
What I particularly love about this piece is the glimpse it offers into childhood entertainment of another era. The printed advertisements and charming illustrations inside the box are almost as interesting as the game itself.
The set shows plenty of age-related wear including fading, marks, foxing, staining, small losses to the box edges and old pen marks inside. These signs of use have been left untouched and form part of its character and history.
A lovely decorative piece for a games collection, playroom display, study, library shelf or curiosity cabinet.

A Piece with a Story
Not pristine, not perfect, but exactly the sort of object that earns its place in a collection through use, survival and character.
