A wonderfully unusual and increasingly elusive complete collection of sixteen vintage novelty buttons, modelled after the iconic King George VI definitive British postage stamps issued during the reign of George VI (1937 to 1952).

Made from what is believed to be casein (Galalith), an early moulded plastic widely used for quality buttons during the 1930s and 1940s, these charming examples feature crisp moulded portraits, scalloped stamp-like edges and integral moulded shanks to the reverse. The warm feel of the material, natural patina and honest wear all point to genuine vintage manufacture.

The collection comprises:

8 dark brown buttons

4 cream buttons

4 deep red buttons

Each measures approximately the size of a postage stamp and retains its original shank. The portraits show gentle wear from use, while the colours remain beautifully rich.

Although an exact maker has not been identified, these buttons were probably manufactured in Czechoslovakia for export to the British market, where novelty casein buttons enjoyed great popularity during the late 1930s and 1940s. While similar individual examples occasionally appear, complete matched groups such as this are exceptionally difficult to find.

Whether displayed in a collector's cabinet, incorporated into a textile collection, or treasured by a button enthusiast, this is a delightful and unusual survivor from the golden age of novelty button making.

Condition

Good vintage condition with age-related wear, surface marks and patina consistent with use and age. All sixteen buttons retain their original moulded shanks. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.
