Antique Victorian Emery Needle Sharpener c.1880-1910

Antique Victorian Emery Needle Sharpener c.1880-1910
A fascinating survivor from a Victorian workbox, this antique emery needle sharpener was once an essential tool for the serious needleworker. Decorative as well as practical, it features an ornate cast metal mount flanked by original wool emery cushions.
Before modern disposable needles became commonplace, emery sharpeners were used to clean, polish and maintain pins and needles. The abrasive emery hidden within the wool helped keep sewing tools in good condition, making pieces such as this a familiar sight in sewing baskets and workboxes throughout the late 19th century.
Today, it stands as a beautiful reminder of domestic craftsmanship and the importance of needlework in everyday life. Equally at home in a collection of antique sewing tools, displayed amongst thimbles and haberdashery, or treasured as a small decorative curiosity.
Its appeal lies not only in its age but in its survival. Many utilitarian sewing tools were used until worn out and discarded, making original examples increasingly difficult to find.
Condition
Good antique condition with age-related wear consistent with use and age. The metal mount displays an attractive patina, while the original wool emery cushions show gentle signs of wear that speak to their history and authenticity.
