A wonderfully atmospheric vintage German lustre ware plate, decorated with a raised pastoral scene of figures, sheep and delicate foliage.

Measuring a generous 29 cm in diameter, the plate has a softly scalloped and moulded rim with two pierced handles. The surface has the most beautiful pearlescent lustre, shifting between silvery blue, smoky green, soft pink and mother-of-pearl as the light catches it.

Raised creamy-white figures and foliage circle the central well, creating an almost cameo-like pastoral scene. Originally these plates appear to have had additional gilded decoration within the centre. On this example much of that has softened and worn away over time, leaving a wonderfully quiet, faded surface.

The combination of worn lustre, relief decoration and muted colour gives it exactly the sort of imperfect beauty that works so well displayed amongst antique textiles, old ceramics and collected objects.

The reverse carries a faint impressed mark.
