French Antique Initialed Chemise de Nuit, 1890s

French Antique Initialed Chemise de Nuit, 1890s
A rare French antique chemise de nuit dating from the 1890s–1900s, handmade in rustic slubby linen with a natural biscuit tone. This traditional night smock or underdress was hand-stitched with care, featuring a drawstring neckline for an adjustable fit and delicate red embroidered initials J D, a personal monogram that speaks of its original owner.
The fabric has a beautiful coarse weave that will soften with age and washing. Designed with a scoop neckline and roomy silhouette, it drapes effortlessly and works just as well today as a dress, tunic, or artist’s smock. It takes dye beautifully if you wish to change its natural tone.
Condition: excellent for its age with gentle signs of time, no major flaws.
Date: circa 1890s–1900s.
Measurements:
Bust: 54 in
Waist: 55 in
Hips: 61 in
Length: 40 in
A timeless piece of antique French textile history, both wearable and collectible
