Needlework for Student Teachers (1899) | Complete Victorian Needlework Manual

Needlework for Student Teachers (1899) | Complete Victorian Needlework Manual

£110.00

A wonderfully preserved late Victorian needlework manual, published in 1899 and intended for the training of student teachers, scholarship candidates and certificated students. Written by Amy K. Smith and introduced by Lady Wolverton, founder of the Needlework Guild, this substantial volume offers a fascinating glimpse into the teaching of sewing and domestic skills at the end of the nineteenth century.

Far more than a simple instructional handbook, the book combines practical needlework techniques, educational theory, examination requirements, decorative alphabets, stitch diagrams, garment construction methods and period reports on the state of needlework education in Britain. Particularly appealing are the large folding plates and sampler patterns, all present and in remarkably good condition.

The original cloth binding remains attractive, with decorative gilt and terracotta lettering to the cover. Inside are charming period ownership inscriptions dated 1903, adding to the book's sense of history and provenance.

A highly collectible volume for textile historians, needlework enthusiasts, costume researchers, collectors of women's history, and anyone drawn to the rich visual language of Victorian domestic education.
