Large Victorian James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Jar

Large Victorian James Keiller Dundee Marmalade Jar
A substantial and increasingly hard-to-find Victorian James Keiller & Son Dundee Marmalade jar, bearing the iconic black advertising transfer that made these pots a familiar sight in homes across Britain during the late nineteenth century.
The transfer proudly records the firm's international awards, including the London Prize Medal of 1862 and the Vienna Grand Medal of Merit of 1873, celebrating the success of one of Britain's most famous marmalade makers. Today these jars are treasured not only for their history but for their simple, timeless form and enduring decorative appeal.
This example is one of the larger sizes produced and is noticeably larger than the more commonly encountered Keiller jars. Larger examples are increasingly sought after by collectors and interior stylists alike, making them particularly desirable pieces for display.
The jar retains a wonderfully clear transfer and displays the gentle signs of age expected from a piece that has survived for well over a century. There is age-related wear, staining, crazing and surface imperfections, all of which contribute to its authentic character and patina. It remains a sturdy and highly decorative example.
Perfect as a vase for garden flowers, a holder for kitchen utensils, artist's brushes, dried herbs, or simply displayed among a collection of antique advertising wares.
