Familiar Wild Flowers by F. Edward Hulme | Early Victorian Botanical Book, c.1878

Familiar Wild Flowers by F. Edward Hulme | Early Victorian Botanical Book, c.1878

£28.00

A beautiful Victorian botanical book, rather the worse for wear on the outside, but with forty wonderfully preserved colour illustrations within.

Familiar Wild Flowers, written and illustrated by F. Edward Hulme, was published by Cassell, Petter & Galpin in the late nineteenth century. This undated copy is believed to be an early edition, dating from around 1878.

The book contains 40 full-page colour chromolithographs, all present, depicting British wild flowers in lovely botanical detail.

What makes this copy particularly appealing is the contrast between the damaged binding and the beautifully preserved illustrations. The original green cloth covers retain their decorative gilt detailing, while the plates themselves remain remarkably bright, crisp and clean, with very little foxing.

Although the book is no longer sound as a bound volume, it offers a lovely opportunity for someone who enjoys restoring old books, collecting Victorian botanical illustrations or framing antique flower prints.

Condition

The binding is in poor condition and requires significant attention. The complete text block has separated from the original cloth covers, and the stitching is exposed and loose.

The front and back boards remain connected to each other but are detached from the book's pages.

In contrast, the interior botanical plates are exceptionally well preserved for their age, with bright colours, crisp paper and very little foxing.

Please study the photographs carefully, particularly those showing the damaged binding.

A lovely old book with considerable charm, offered as found and particularly suited to restoration or the appreciation of its individual botanical plates.
