Victorian Needlepoint Pastoral Scene in Gilt Frame

Victorian Needlepoint Pastoral Scene in Gilt Frame
A richly detailed antique needlepoint panel in soft rosewood and moss tones, this piece depicts a rustic pastoral figure holding a scythe, framed by garlands of flowers and scrolling foliage. Hand-stitched in petit point on open canvas, the work likely dates from the late 19th century, circa 1870 to 1890, and reflects the Victorian taste for romanticised rural life.
The gentleman, dressed in faded red breeches and waistcoat, stands confidently in a dreamlike garden landscape, flanked by stylised trees and distant hills. The frame is gilt wood with a classic beaded inner edge, beautifully complementing the aged tones of the embroidery.
There are signs of age, including gentle foxing and wear to the groundcloth, and some patina to the frame, but the threads remain vibrant and fully intact. These subtle imperfections only enhance the timeworn charm of the piece.
A decorative textile with a painterly, almost tapestry-like quality, perfect for adding historical character to a gallery wall, bedroom alcove or hallway vignette.
