The First Hints of Autumn – Styling Notes from Pomme de Jour

Rustic French tian bowl filled with deep purple figs, styled on an ornate tasselled textile for early autumn mood.

There’s a moment when the air shifts and you know autumn is close. Mornings carry a softness, evenings draw in earlier, and the colours outside begin to turn. We start to add layers to ourselves and in our homes. Out come the socks, the multiple layers that build warmth and comfort. It’s the season to really lean into these layers, to soften edges with textiles, and to bring in warm notes that hint at what’s ahead.

Deepening the Palette

As September edges into October, bring in darker tones and layered arrangements. Think of stacking antique books on side tables, mixing in wood-fired ceramics with fresh flowers, or layering patterned textiles in unexpected combinations.

Draped vintage floral fabric in painterly greens, pinks, and russet tones, layered over a William Morris-style textile with chrysanthemum motifs for an autumn styling scene.

Creating Warmth and Light

Autumn is about atmosphere. Small pools of light from vintage lamps, candles tucked into old apothecary jars, or even a ceramic fruit drainer repurposed as a tealight holder all bring that layered, lived-in glow.

Closing Note

Autumn styling doesn’t need to be a dramatic overhaul. It’s about shifting mood with just a few thoughtful pieces, layering history and warmth into your home so the season feels like a gentle arrival rather than a sudden change.
